Behind The Brand: Knots & Tails

As a dog walker, I see a lot of gear every day, but some pieces immediately stand out. I first discovered Knots & Tails through a client and friend, and I was instantly impressed. Inspired by them, I ordered a slip lead for Teddy, and later added a collar. From the moment I held them, it was clear they were built to last. The paracord is strong yet soft against her neck, and the finish shows real attention to detail.
The customer service was just as exceptional. I’d reached out to see if Kelsey could colour match the collar to Teddy’s harness, and she went above and beyond, sending photos of several paracord options to help me find the best fit. It’s little touches like this that show just how invested Kelsey is in every single order.
Kelsey and Kyle, a husband-and-wife team, are behind the brand. Kelsey is the creative heart, designing and handcrafting each piece herself, while Kyle uses his engineering skills to refine designs and ensure everything runs smoothly. Together, they’ve built a brand that balances practicality, reliability, and thoughtful design.
Starting a business can feel intimidating, but Kelsey’s journey proves that curiosity and persistence go a long way.
“I started Knots & Tails with the encouragement and support of my husband, Kyle - he’s not only the reason I took the leap, but also the other half of Knots & Tails. He helps me with all sorts behind the scenes, and I definitely couldn’t do it without him! Starting something new can be daunting, especially when it comes to the financial and business side of things, but you really do learn as you go. There are so many people and resources out there to help, and you’re never as alone as you might think.”
Kelsey’s creativity has shaped not just the brand, but also her own growth:
“My creativity has helped me find my passion for making and weaving Paracord gear, but it’s also opened up new interests I didn’t expect. I originally bought a sewing machine to make my leads stronger, and now I’m learning how to quilt and create other handmade items too! It’s been such a good reminder that learning is fun - starting your own business doesn’t just grow your skills, it helps you discover new things you love along the way.”
Her advice for anyone wanting to start something themselves is simple but powerful:
“My advice for anyone wanting to start their own dog product business is: don’t wait until everything feels ‘perfect.’ There’s never a perfect or ‘right’ time to start - just do it! Start small, keep learning, and let your passion guide you.”
Teddy wears her Knots & Tails collar and slip lead every day, and it’s clear how much thought goes into every aspect - from the handwoven paracord to the gorgeous packaging. These are products designed to last, and make everyday walks with your dog feel that little bit more special.
