How Autism Helps Me Be a Better Pet Sitter and Dog Walker.

Starting my own pet-sitting and dog-walking business has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. I’ve always loved animals, and now I get to spend each day doing meaningful work that fits well with my strengths as an autistic person.

I’ve always been the person at parties who ends up on the floor with the dog or cat, happily giving them attention while others chat. I enjoy people too, but there’s something especially comforting about the company of animals – no small talk needed, just trust and a good scratch behind the ears!

When it comes to your pet, I don’t just send a quick “all fine.” I genuinely care about each animal’s wellbeing and try to be there with you every step of the way. Whether it’s celebrating a great day or offering reassurance during tougher moments, you can expect a full update, a few photos, and maybe a funny story or two to brighten your day 🥰

Autism and how it helps me 🧠

Autism gives me a different way of seeing the world, which is a real advantage in this line of work. I’m focused, reliable, and detail-oriented. I stick to routines, follow instructions carefully, and always aim to provide the best care. Whether it’s giving medication, keeping to a feeding schedule, or sending thoughtful updates, I take it all seriously.

Animals have long been a passion of mine. I’ve spent years learning about their behaviour and needs, and I genuinely enjoy their company. Their clear and consistent communication makes it easy to build a bond and understand what they need.

When it comes to socialising, I sometimes find conversations without a clear topic tiring. But talking about pets is something I really enjoy. It gives us common ground and makes connecting easier 🥰

Creating the right environment 🌳

In previous jobs, I struggled with sensory overload from noisy or busy environments. It wasn’t about not wanting to do well, I just needed a way of working that suits how I process the world.

Running my own business has given me that space. I can organise my days in a way that works for me, maintain high standards, and focus on work I truly care about.

Consistency is one of my biggest strengths. If a pet has particular needs, a strict routine, or a favourite blanket that must go exactly in the right spot, I make sure it’s done properly every time. That kind of care builds trust, which is essential when looking after someone’s beloved companion.

Understanding myself 🥰

Getting an autism diagnosis helped me understand myself more clearly. It gave me the insight I needed to build a business that truly reflects who I am and how I work best. While there are of course challenges that come with autism, it’s also brought out strengths that really help me thrive in this kind of work.
